Oh, yeah, completely out of left field.

I didn't expect anyone writing in the English language to get it since Pinter got it, what? 2 years ago?

I didn't expect an English writer to get it either, but Lessing is very very late in getting it, considering that Jelinek got it already. Lessing has been so influential. I'm glad she got it before Oates... but I hope Oates lives long enough to compete for it too.

Lessing changed my life. I frequently think about The Grass is Singing, but it was The Summer Before the Dark that, seriously, gave me a chance to live differently.
