High levels of ozones in Houston aside, the FIFA World Cup is starting this Friday in Munich with Germany against Costa Rica, followed Poland vs. Ecuador in Gelsenkirche. This is one of the rare moment where I am remotely interested in sports. (The other ones being the NBA Play-Offs, Wimbledon and the Rugby Cup of the Nations) This is the one game where everything goes (see South Korea, Japan, the United States, Turkey going to the quarterfinals last World Cup). There aren't any teams that is really superior to the other (with the exception of Brazil ang Germany).
This is also one of the rare moments where I can root for a country without feeling guilty (of course I am rooting for France, it's Zizou's last season!)
Juan (coffee shop buddy and med school student) and I are already making prognosis on the outcome of the group games.
Here are my group picks:
Group A
1st: Germany
2nd: Ecuador
Group B
This one is a little tougher. England, Sweden and Paraguay all have good teams, but England has had a series of injuries lately.
1st: England
2nd: Paraguay
Group C
Another tough group. Argentina is a well-known team, as are the Netherlands. But the Ivory Coast is the wildcard. But I choose the following:
1st: Argentina
2nd: the Netherlands
Group D
1st: Mexico
2nd: Portugal (even though they have Figo)
Group E
Okay, the United States is the team to look at. They have more or less the same roster as the last World Cup, with the same coach. They fared really well last time, but they are still underestimated. But it's also a tough group, due to the presence of Italy and the Czech Republic.
1st: United States (yeah, I know)
2nd: Italy
Group F
There's no way Brazil is not going to the group of 16, but Japan has a pretty good team (although a different coach) and so does Croatia.
1st: Brazil
2nd: Japan
Group G
This one is easy. South Korea has the same roster as the last World Cup and France has Zinedine Zidane, the world's best player.
1st: France
2nd: South Korea
Group H
1st: Spain
2nd: Tunisia
For the Group of 16:
Germany vs. Paraguay -> Germany wins
Argentina vs. Portugal -> Tough one, but I say Argentina wins
England vs. Ecuador -> Tough one, I say Ecuador (just to be a contrarian)
Mexico vs. the Netherlands -> Ugh ... Mexico
USA vs. Japan -> Hum ... Japan has a very good defense, but the US are more balanced, so USA
France vs. Tunisia -> France
Brazil vs. Italy -> Brazil
Spain vs. South Korea -> Another tough one, but I say South Korea (they beat Portugal last World Cup, no reason they can't beat Spain)
Quarterfinals
Germany vs. Argentina -> Germany
Ecuador vs Mexico -> Mexico
USA vs. France -> This game should be interesting to watch here. Of course, I say France. We have the best player in the world (Zidane), not to mention Cissé, Henry, Thuram, Trézéguet, Vieira ... You get the picture.
Brazil vs. South Korea -> Brazil
Semifinals
Germany vs. Mexico -> Germany
France vs. Brazil -> France (we beat them once, no reason we can't do it again)
Finals
Germany vs. France -> Hum ... Really tough one, but I say France, just because it's Zidane's last season as a pro.
3rd Place Game
Mexico vs. Brazil -> Brazil

Germany has that cute captain...
damn i wish you were to watch with me...
nice breakdown francois...
let's find a german bar in boulder!
sadly, i don't like the German team or the US team. And I really hate England. Of those three I like Germany best though. but as i've said before my interest in soccer is purely aesthetic.
i don't think there is any problem appreciating a sport for its aesthetic value. of course, i'm trying to find one with baseball and football. and golf. i don't get golf.
i think jessica's "aesthetic" is synonomous with male-hotness (am i wrong jessica?)...
but but but...i'll be back in the yay area in less than 25 days...are you still planing on visiting? ton o' bars in the yay that will be playing the cup...it's on ma'fucker...
football!!!
25 days? that's one of the things i needed to know. yeah, still planning to visit, but it would be closer to late july/early august. maybe i'll be in the bay area for the final!
Figo is old!
Wow, group E... I have a feelin about 'em Czechs.
I know you're counting on Zidane, but it's the German homefront!
I likes this time...:)
It's times like this when I wish I had T.V.
I always hated Oliver Kahn. We used to call him 'blonder affe'. Screw that Bayern sucker, in fact, screw Bayern! Borussia Dortmund all the way baby!
Regarding that Turkey/South Korea goal... are you referring to the one shot in 5 seconds?
about turkey/south korea, yes, that goal, although i remember it was around 11 seconds. i am kind of pissed off that turkey was not qualified to play this year.
we should all head to a german bar and watch the cup.
Old people I know! It's all grampas. I want new legends. Or the old ones to have spectacular, epic deaths in the middle of games, as WW III breaks out in the background...mmm, soccer anime...
German bar? The only place in this town that seems to be showing the world cup is a really expensive hipster bar.
i think zidane is going to do something totally insane for this world cup. you know, his last game for the real madrid was ... well, not spectacular (it ended in a tie, but zidane scored a goal)
i am not quite sure if i will be able to find a bar that will play the world cup in houston. well, at least we have the mexican bars.
I can't believe you're going with Paraguay over Sweden. I believe in Zlatan (that's the Swedish star).
As for tough German goalies - how about Schumacher from Spain 82. I just had a discussion about him with a Vietnamese-French stock broker. He was still upset about that semifinal (the most exciting game I ever saw).
John: Yes, the aesthetics of sports is directly related to male hotness. This is why I can't stand Am. football or baseball. Baseball players are the ugliest. I love Tennis and soccer and cycling. But it's also about shapes, pattens, and movement. The way soccer fields look like schools of fish merging and unmergnig; the curves of many bikes going around bends; the linesmen bobbing up and down.
The reason I'm not for the US is because although Landon Donovan is hot, I think he's overhyped. Hot and overhyped is a bad combination.
as for the 1982 world cup semifinal, i was too young, but heard so much about it. it's even referenced in japan in the manga captain tsubasa. i mean, schumacher vs. platini! what more could you ask for?
Both Larsson and Zlatan are from my home province of Skåne. I have complete faith in Zlatan.
What an incredible first + last goal from Germany!
johannes-- i mean ljungberg, but i got his first name wrong (but really, i don't need to know his name...) happy birthday to joyelle! now i have to look up skåne on the map...
I've only been through there-- through Lund-- but not staying there.
