“The Discovery of France,” by contrast, suggests that the rioters, and the rest of the nonwhite Islamic population, just might constitute another, as yet unassimilated “microcivilization” that gives the lie to the myth of French unity — another testament to the fact that there is, as Robb concludes, “no such thing as a ‘pure’ Frenchman.” In their very marginality, intractability and ostensible strangeness, these people are, one might say, the true sons and daughters of France.
