A quick look at the letter section of the new issue of Time reminds us how sickengly enamoured some Americans are with religion. But this letter made me smile:
Received in the mail:
-Inverse, a chapbook by Maryrose Larkin
-the September issue of foursquare
-Mail art by most frequent collaborator Lauren Kohne
I am loathe to say that people from New Jersey have some sense. When they are not supporting the New York Yankees, that is.
And Eclipse has just re-released Charles Bernstein's first book Asylum as a PDF file.
Found the other day at the bookstore (but not bought): Best American Comic Books 2006, edited by HarperCollins. It looked certainly fancier than Best American Poetry and I'm surprised no one had thought about it before. I can't remember how the series editor was, but the guest editor was Harvey Pekar (American Splendor, The Quitter). Thank god, no superhero comics were included. Instead, a section of Jessica Abel's La Perdida and Joe Sacco. The Hernandez Bros were not included, however.
Let's not forget that the slim 1% difference between humans and chimps that gave us Mozart, Einstein and Socrates is also responsible for serial killers, totalitarian despots and greasy-palmed politicians. This letter coming from a gentleman from Locust Grove, Georgia. Which reminds me of something the evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins said of religion, something about religion being a nice story to make us feel warm and comfortable.

New Jersey's Supreme Court opened the door to gay marriage Wednesday, ruling that homosexuals are entitled to the same rights as heterosexuals, but leaving it to lawmakers to legalize same-sex unions.
