Those two paragons of progress ...

Trying to figure out where I left my copy of this James Laughlin poem where this line appeared (as strange as it may seem, although not really, Tony Hoagland really digs the Objectivists), because of this:
[Alberto Santos-Dumont] complained to [Louis] Cartier that he could not time his own flights because it was dangerous for him to take his hands off the controls and fish out his pocket watch. Cartier promised he would come up with a solution, and he soon invented one of the first wristwatches for Santos-Dumont - a commercial version of which became a must-have accessory for status-conscious Parisians.
